Howard University in Washington, DC

Located in the heart of Washington, DC, Howard University has been at the forefront of higher education since its founding in 1867. The university is a historically black college and university (HBCU) with a rich and diverse student body and faculty. Howard has sought to “dispel the ignorance of race and remove the diversity of color” as its mission since its inception and has remained committed to reaching this goal for over 150 years. The university was founded by a group of Civil War veterans and subsequently named for General Oliver Otis Howard, a supporter of the Freedmen’s Bureau and a leader in the development of America’s earliest Black colleges. With the help of the Freedmen’s Bureau and the financial support of the American Missionary Association, Howard was able to establish itself as one of the most respected institutions of higher education. With a plethora of majors, minors, and certificates to choose from, Howard offers students the opportunity to pursue their academic passions. Students may also choose to join any one of the more than 300 student organizations on campus that actively promote various interests in sports, music, service, honor societies, and religious activities.
