It’s hard to describe Sixteenth Street in terms that anyone other than a resident of the area can understand, but I’ll try. This neighborhood encompasses the historic enclave known as “Downtown DC” – the district where the White House, Congress, the CIA, and other government agencies are located. The name is a mouthful, but it accurately sums up all that is found in the area: rows upon rows of shops, restaurants, offices, and other public buildings housing the most important people in Washington DC. Just walking down this stretch of road will give you a glimpse into the inner workings of the US government, with a distinctly “DC” feel. Additionally, this highly-visited locale is home to a wide variety of other historic landmarks and museums that visitors will undoubtedly want to check out. Many visitors come to this part of Washington DC to take in the beautiful monuments and architectural wonders that comprise the district. One of the most famous is the National Mall, which is an open-air structure encompassing nearly half of the Mall. The Old Administration Building is also located nearby, displaying an impressive history of the executive branch. Also on the agenda is the gorgeous Potomac River Greenway, which meanders through the heart of the district. Those who are interested in historical architecture will enjoy the National Maritime Center, an interpretive center that was established in 1923 and houses one of the largest collections of naval and commercial artwork in the world. There are many restaurants and businesses to choose from, so whether you are interested in history, culture, food, or both, there is sure to be something that is right for you. Just a few blocks north of the Heights neighborhood is the Wheaton Plaza, a shopping center that features many fine restaurants. Dining here is a bit more upscale than you would find elsewhere in the area, but still offers a great view of the city and the Wheaton area. Many visitors to the Heights choose to spend their evenings enjoying the numerous restaurants and bars on H Streets across the District.
